Eeva Dreams of Falling Home by Janey BennettEeva Dreams of Falling

The present-day news of the awful life-trauma caused to young brains by separating children from their secure families brought to mind the short story I wrote in 2009, Eeva Dreams of Falling.

The same sort of abrupt separation happened to a generation of young children in Finland.

SEPARATION
Anna Ruusuvuori, Sculptor

During World War II, Finland was fighting Russia, which had announced its intention to annex the country and exterminate the Finns during the Winter and Continuation Wars. In light of this threat, the Finnish government decided to evacuate the children of Finland. This action was taken in the hope that — should the threat materialize — at least some vestige of Finland would remain.

70,000 children were abruptly shipped to Sweden. Their suffering has been memorialized by a touching statue created by sculptor Anna Ruusuvuori. (The Russians never did conquer the Finns!)

It was this historical event that formed the basis for my story, EEVA DREAMS OF FALLING. I offer it here as a free download.

70,000 Finnish children were sent away from their homes, for their safety, during World War II. Eeva was four years old when she went to Sweden. What happened there? And why does it plague her grown daughter now?
